Know The Importance Of Paediatric Dentistry

Children go through quick growth and development of jawbones, gums, and teeth. Be watchful whether your child gets the right growth and development or not. If something is hindering the growth, we must address that as your child may miss their vital oral growth phase.

For infants, the first tooth erupts within 6-10 months of their life. By the time they reach three years of age, most children have their full set of primary teeth – 20 teeth in total. Many people have the misconception that the eruption and growth of primary teeth are not very crucial as the milk teeth are to be replaced by permanent teeth later.

Do you know the growth and development of the primary teeth are well connected with the growth and development of the jaws and gums of the children as well? The underdeveloped jaws and gums prevent your child from getting proper eruption and development of their permanent teeth in later years.

Also, primary teeth help children to chew and speak correctly and play a crucial role in acquiring essential life skills.

By the age 6-7, most children lose their first tooth to make way for permanent teeth. The eruption and growth of permanent teeth continue through teenage as batches – first molars, canine teeth, central incisors, second molars, and so on. Many people will have 32 teeth – including third molars – in total when they turn their age 21.

Do you know the issues like overcrowding and improper alignment of teeth are easy to correct at younger ages? Your child can use aligners and braces from the age of 11 if their teeth are not growing in the right direction. Your dentist can examine the alignment of the teeth during the regular check-ups and confirm the treatment options.

The First Dental Check-Up With Mernda Smiles

Immediately after you see the first tooth erupt, we recommend you bring your child to our clinic for an oral exam. Note that we have created a fun, friendly environment at our Mernda clinic for your sweet little champ to get a comfortable check-up experience. The visit also helps them to familiarise with a clinic environment.

During the oral exam, our dentists will monitor your child’s oral health and ensure that the teeth, gums, and jaws are developing properly. As a trusted name for children’s dentistry in Mernda, we will also provide you with general tips and practices to ensure excellent oral health for your toddler from their early ages.

Do you have any questions about the growth and development of your child’s oral structure or dental hygiene? Raise your questions with us during the check-up; we are happy to answer all your questions.

Regular Dental Visits

After the initial dental check-up, we recommend you bring your child to our clinic every six months for regular dental check-ups. It can help us to monitor their teeth development and growth, confirm whether they are getting proper development, identify any dental decay, and provide treatment solutions to address that.

Is your child struggling with teething issues? Do they follow good eating and drinking habits? Children often need dental cleaning to improve their oral health. Our children’s dentists will also teach them how to brush properly, how to floss to get the best results, tips to achieve the best oral health, the importance of good oral health, and more.

Tips For Parents

You should start brushing the teeth and gums of your child since you notice their first tooth. Use a non-fluoridated toothpaste to clean the teeth of your child until they turn their age 3. Remember them to brush twice a day using a baby toothbrush.

From the age of 3, you can start using fluoridated toothpaste as long as your child starts spitting. Continue to brush them until they are capable of brushing themselves – usually by 5-6 years. Teach them how to brush properly and monitor whether they are accurately brushing or not. Also, ensure that you floss the teeth of your child daily.

Be mindful of any dental decay to help them to recover at the earliest. By making your child follow good eating and drinking habits, you can contribute to the oral health of your children. Ensure that your child adheres to the following practices to achieve excellent dental health:

  • Avoid snacks that are sweet, sticky, or chewy. This applies to soft drinks as well.
  • Set routine mealtimes, say no to grazing.
  • Serve a balanced diet to your child that include fresh vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and dairy products.
  • Encourage them to drink plenty of fluoridated water. Drinking water after every meal can help them to wash away the lingering food.
  • Monitor your child’s sugary food intake and reduce it to the minimum.

Does Your Child Experience Dental Decay? Check This Way

Your regular monitoring – at least once every two weeks – can help you to identify the traces of early dental decay.

Lift your child’s top lip and roll down the bottom lip to see their gums and teeth. Do you see any white patches on the teeth close to the gumline? Try to brush and remove the patches. If they do not go away, this could be a sign of tooth decay.

Also, check and confirm if you see any black, brown, or grey spots in their teeth. If yes, it’s time to take your child to your dentist for a comprehensive oral examination. Do you see any change in their behaviour, or do they wake up at night? It could also be a sign of dental decay.
