However, tooth extraction becomes a reality beyond all these efforts. If you are struggling with the following dental issues, you might need an extraction:

  • Severe gum disease
  • Crowded teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • A deep infection in the tooth
  • Incorrectly growing wisdom tooth

In most of these cases, it becomes a situation where tooth extraction is the option to save your other teeth and ensure total oral health.

The Tooth Extraction Process

At Mernda Smiles, we offer two types of tooth removal for our Mernda patients based on the complexity of their tooth conditions: simple extraction and surgical extraction

Simple Extraction

In a simple extraction, our dentists will remove your tooth by administering local anaesthesia to numb the area. However, if multiple teeth need to be removed, we may apply local anaesthesia under nitrous oxide to provide a completely painless extraction experience.

Once the area numbed, our dentists will use a special dental tool to loosen the tooth from your gum. Then, they will remove the tooth with forceps. You get a hassle-free, painless tooth extraction !

Surgical Extraction

If you have complex tooth conditions or are struggling with dental trauma, dentists may suggest a surgical tooth removal to ensure the safe extraction of your tooth. During the initial consultation, your dentist will take an x-ray of your tooth and examine the area to confirm the surgical extraction.

Note that oral maxillofacial surgeons perform surgical extraction in a hospital. Our dentists will discuss the entire procedure before starting the surgery and review your general and oral health. Your dental surgeon will administer general anaesthesia before beginning the procedure. The surgeon will incise your gum and may remove the bone around the tooth for the safe removal of your tooth.

Based on the condition of your tooth, the dental surgeons will section it to prevent damages to the adjacent tissues due to extraction. They will then elevate and remove the tooth fragments, smooth any sharp bone edges, and put suiters for healing.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

As you know, wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that erupt in humans between the ages of 17 and 24. In many people, wisdom teeth do not develop properly as they either partially erupt, get stuck inside jawbones, or grow in the wrong direction. People who struggle from wisdom teeth issues usually do not have enough room for the growth and development of the third set of molars.

Due to the incorrect growth and development of wisdom teeth, people may experience dental infection, tooth decay, loss of the adjacent healthy teeth, and low oral health. In such situations, the dentist may perform wisdom teeth removal to improve your oral health.

Note that some wisdom teeth may be impacted under the gums and would not be visible on the outside. Therefore, you should approach your dentist if you experience any discomfort, pain, or infection around the gum area where wisdom teeth erupt.

What To Expect After Extraction?

  • You may experience some bleeding for 24 hours after the extraction. Bite soft padding to control the bleeding.
  • If the extraction is performed under local anaesthesia, the bleeding usually stops in 10 to 15 minutes, and you can drive back home. Don’t forget to bring someone along with you to take you back home if the tooth extraction is performed after administering general anaesthesia.
  • If you experience any swelling after the removal, apply ice bags in the area for 10 minutes intervals.
  • Avoid spitting and rinsing forcefully for 24 hours to avoid the dislodging of the blood clot.
  • Eat soft foods, don’t use straws for drinking, avoid hot food and drinks for at least 24 hours.
  • You can brush and floss your teeth but avoid the extraction site.
  • If you feel pain after the anaesthesia wears off, you can choose over-the-counter painkillers to control the pain.
  • Don’t smoke during the recovery period. Smoking can slow down the healing and can worsen your oral health.

The Wisdom Teeth Removal Process

At Mernda Smiles, we offer both simple extraction and surgical extraction based on the condition of each wisdom tooth. Our dentists will examine your wisdom teeth, take x-rays, analyse the growth and development, and confirm the need for extraction.

We will explain the procedure to you before extracting the wisdom tooth. If we can remove your wisdom tooth with a simple extraction, we will administer local anaesthesia and complete the procedure at our clinic.

However, if the condition of your tooth is complex and needs a surgical extraction, an oral surgeon will perform the procedure under general anaesthesia in a hospital. The extraction may include the removal of some portion of your jawbone, especially if the tooth is trapped inside the jaw. Finally, the oral surgeon will put the sutures for healing and recovery.

Do you experience high pain, continuous bleeding, have signs of infection, swelling, redness, nausea, shortness of breath, or vomiting after the extraction? Seek the assistance of your dentist at the earliest.

Note that any invasive or surgical treatment procedure carries risks. Therefore, we request you to take a second opinion from a qualified health practitioner before proceeding with the surgical extraction option.
